Lost in the gardens of the Titans

To paraphrase Isoroku Yamamoto, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giantess and fill her with a terrible resolve.”

Nature slumbers fitfully. Beware the day it wakes.

This is of course not meant literally; I do not anthropomorphize nature. But that we cannot simply go on as we are should by now be apparent to all who have eyes to see: Nature is a web of incalculable complexity, rich and robust but not infinitely so.

How far off is the crucial tipping-point? The real danger lies in this: We have no idea.
